Notes:
-- The Knudsen transfer consisted of 4 tape sides containing 7 distinct jams
-- This fileset includes jams 3 thru 7 only
-- The first two jams already circulate as 12-16-1968 and are not included
-- Refer to detailed notes, below for additional information

Set 01:
t01 - Jam #3
t02 - Jam #4
t03 - Jam #5
t04 - Jam #6
t05 - Jam #7

============================================================================

The first two jams on the transfer already circulate as Matrix, 12-16-1968. The sources are 4529 (miller.neo_levo) and 97296 (boswell.smith). The Knudsen versions are inferior to those that currently circulate and no serious attempt was made to remediate them.

Jam #1 (Getz jam)
- length: 32:49
- contains the same material that is on 4529 and 97296
- all three sources are uncut and end with applause, consistent with a performance venue such as the Matrix
- The knudsen tape runs 13-15% faster that the other two tapes (which have similar times of 37:51 and 38:18)
- I have no way of knowing which tape is pitched correctly
- Both the neo_levo and boswell sources are superior sounding

Jam #2 (Dryden jam)
- length: 44:48 (un-edited), 42:53 (edited)
- contains essentially the same material that is on 4529 and 97296
- the neo_levo source contains 3:07 minutes of tuneup that is not available on either the knudsen of boswell source. It is apparent that noise reduction was applied
- the boswell source "slides" in at the start
- the knudsen source suffers from 2 major defects
--- there is a a discontinuity at 4:40 where two source are spliced together
----- approximately 2:15 of content is duplicated
----- the first source runs about 12% fast
----- the second source runs about 7% slow
--- there is a tape flip at 12:51 (un-edited timings)
-----there is approximately 20 secs of content missing
- both the the neo_levo and boswell sources are uncut

The remaining 5 jams which are contained in this file set all appear to be from a single source and are generally in good shape. However there are content gaps caused by a physical tape switch, a tape flip during the initial transfer to tape and seven dropouts of greater that 1 sec each in duration. All timings listed below are after any edits.

Jam #3 (34:55)
00:00 fades in
12:00 transition
14:11 tape switch from tape 1B to tape 2A
-- an unknown amount of music was lost
-- the two sections were cross-faded (7.25 sec) to smooth the transition
34:50 applause

Jam #4 (15:13)
00:00 apparent clean start
09:00 dropout: 1.513s, total deleted 2.385s
09:49 dropout: 1.480s, total deleted 1.666s
15:13 ends abrubtly - no applause

Jam #5 (13:25)
00:00 apparent clean start
-- there is an organ present for the first 20 sec
06:46 the transfer source contained a fadeout / fadein section, apparently from the dubbing source
-- there was 33 sec of duplicated content which was removed to provide a seamless transition
11:59 dropout: 1.440s, total deleted 2.616s
12:22 dropout: 1.417s, total deleted 4.973s
12:37 dropout: 1.101s, total deleted 8.359s
12:44 dropout: 1.413s, total deleted 4.329s
13:06 dropout: 1.411s, total deleted 5.433s
13:20 applause

Jam #6 (5:44)
00:00 cuts in
04:34 applause
-- no apparent gap between jam #6 and jam #7

Jam #7 (10:14
00:00 clean start
06:53 woman's voice is heard very briefly
10:10 ends with applause

Venue
-This is definitely not from the Jefferson Airplane House studio sessions documented in 12687 and generally attributed to 10-21-1968. Those are close mic'ed studio recordings with lots of typical studio chatter
- Most jams are followed by audible applause that is consistent with a venue like the Matrix rather than the Jefferson Airplane House studio.
- it is possible that there was an afternoon jam session, followed by a performance jam session at the Matrix or a similar pubic location, in the evening

Date
- they played at the Greek Theatre on 10-20-1968 so they were in the bay area on the 21st
- based on the knudsen tapes, other than the tape label, there is no reason to believe that this content came from the recordings that generally circulate as 12-16. As mentioned above, there are two distinct sources that make up the two jams from 12-16 and the content which provides the remaining five jams is generally consistent in quality and of better overall quality than the 12-16 sources
- It is unlikely that this content came from the 12-24 show because it is quite different, both in musicality and quality
- there is a recording that is likely from the Jefferson Airplane House studio from the same date, but with this performance occurring in the evening
- given this information, I kept the date provided on the tapes
