The War Child tour began July 25, 1974 in Adelaide, Australia. It continued through Belgium, France, Spain and the UK in October and November of 1974. Sweden and Denmark were next in December, and the tour moved to the US in January of 1975. The US portion of the tour ended March 13, 1975 and Tull went on to tour Germany, Yugoslavia, Austria and Switzerland the last day in March and most of April 1975, with the last show being in Zurich on April 20.
The band then recorded the Minstrel album from April 24 to June 16, 1975 and produced a broadcast for the BBC’s “Sounds on Sunday” show which featured a few tracks from the upcoming release.
With a set list only slightly changed, the War Child/Minstrel tour began in Germany in June of 1975. After a couple of more shows in Germany and one in Paris at the beginning of July the US portion of the tour kicked off July 24 with the first date in Canada (Vancouver). This tour concluded August 31 in Jacksonville FL.
The Minstrel LP was released in September (5th in the UK, 8th in the US) and after dropping some more of the War Child songs (to be replaced with older material) the tour continued after five days rehearsal in Buffalo NY on September 26. This US tour (with one date in Montreal) ended November 3, 1975. The band went off in December to begin recording the Too Old to Rock and Roll album, with its tour beginning in May of 1976.
The reason most people lump all this together as a “War Child” tour is that War Child songs are played throughout and only Minstrel in the Gallery was played from the new album during the second and third above mentioned tours.
While not the taper, I was in attendance at this show and acquired this one soon after. This is from a second generation tape. The sound is a little bit "boomy", but is very typical of the arena recordings of this era. There is a noticible tape flip at the end of the drum solo following "Ladies" and the very beginning of "War Child" is cut. All in all a very listenable recording from the last leg of the tour.
