October 2007 recollection:

I saw a couple of shows at the Stone in 1985, and one at the Keystone in Palo Alto. I had just moved to Palo Alto, and I was broke....working... but still broke. After the Chinese New Years shows at the newly renamed Kaiser Auditorium, I
went up to Seattle to visit a friend, and then moved down to the Bay Area semi-permanently. We heard that The JGB was to play at The Stone, so on show day we went down to the tenderloin to get ready for the gig. I was with a small group of deadheads at the time, most of whom were homeless
and permanently on tour. We didn't have tickets to the show, and some of the folks didn't have ANY cash. I am pretty sure that the show was sold out, but one of us managed to buy a ticket, and went inside, I don't remember who that was, but it wasn't me....Anyway, after a few minutes, our friend came back outside after they stamped his hand at the door. We all got together on the sidewalk outside and with a ballpoint pen, traced the stamp on his hand, it was some wierd shape, I cannot remember now. Anyway, we pressed hands together and voila, we all had a hand stamp! We proceeded directly into the show....Now here is where my memory is really hazy....Thinking about it today, 22 years later, I thought that we had gotten in with plenty of time before Jerry's first set....but my master tape is missing the two first songs (Cats Under The Stars, & Knockin' On Heaven's Door), which suggests that we got in
late. Well, the tape certainly doesn't lie, so we must have gotten in late, so you get what you get. I carried with me my roommates Shure Microphones, I don't recall the model, and a Sony D-5 Cassette Deck. I usually had a pair of Nakamichi CM-300 mics., but for the life of me I can't remember why I didn't have them at this show. Anyway, I went right up to the stage and stood there all night. When the band was onstage, I held the mics high above my head, right in front of Jerry. I was not even trying to hide the fact that I was taping the show... Jerry would often look at me and grin, as I was only a couple arms lengths away from him. Every now and then I had to switch hands holding the mics, as my arms would get tired...If you listen closely, you can hear the stereo imaging switch when I switched hands. In between sets I might have gotten a drink from the bar, I do not remember. Anyway, the JGB played two sets, and here is my recording. Glad to see it make the transfer to the digital realm.

Cheers,
