Band notes:The two women and three man combo known as Joy of Cooking (JOC) traced their beginnings to 1967 in Berkeley, California. JOC played a kind of generally laid-back folk-rock with various traces of jazz, country, gospel, blues, Latin and even a little R&B funk. This critically acclaimed rock band released three solid studio albums for Capitol Records in the early '70s, and launched the careers of two greatly respected music women, Terry Garthwaite (b. Berkeley, CA, July 11, 1938) and Toni Brown (b. Madison, WI, November 16, 1938). Toni and Terry were the leaders of JOC, as well as pioneers in defining the role of serious women musicians.

ljs_54 edit notes: There's a few seconds of static at about the 0:08 mark of track 09 - I applied some noise reduction to the area which helped. There is also a fade out and fade in the area of about 2:27 - 2:34 of track 9. At first I thought it was a dropout but it's not. The track was probably cut or some other glitch was minimized this way. They are both on the master. Other than that, some minor stuff - not bad for almost 33 years.

Notes on date: According to the Graham Database, they did play with Cold Blood on May 27th, May 28th, May 29th and May 30th, 1971. Looks like they also played with Hot Tuna & Tower of Power on December 3rd & 4th , 1971 at Winterland. I'm also wondering if it could be from there and someone maybe got 12-03-1971 confused with 03-12-1971, and thus the March 1971 original date? I've changed the date to May 1971 thinking it's most likely from one of the Fillmore West shows but the Winterland possibility in December exists.

I've also heard that this might have come from a KSAN broadcast but I can't confirm it and no KSAN station id's or dj chatter is found.
