Stephane Grappelli is a jazz violinist. On this recording, he also plays the piano. He has been called the father of European Jazz (Jazz has parents?) and became famous playing in The Quintette of the Hot Club of France in Paris in the 1930's with Django Reinhardt and others. (A sample of their discography is here: http://www.streetsonline.co.uk/common/product.jhtml?pid=10247509).

Grappelli died on December 1, 1997, following complications from hernia surgery. He was 89.

The sound quality on this recording is consistently good, but varies from track to track, perhaps as the musicians changed instruments and mics. The guitar, for example, is much more present than the violin. There is some hiss, a consequence of quiet passages and acoustic instruments.

Many of the songs are old folk, ragtime, and jazz tunes, updated for modern instruments and audiences. Some of the songs are recognizable, others I could pull from Amazon.com's samples, and others are unknown. Maybe your parents will remember some of them from the radio days. If so, please let me know?

Enjoy!
