Tut Taylor Archive Reel #187 is labeled, "Orville Freeman",
although this is incorrect, as I don't think that the tape features the
famed Democratic politician who was the governor of
Minnesota (1955-1961), and who served as U.S. Secretary of
Agriculture from 1961 to 1969. Politician Freeman is not noted
for his fiddle prowess. Rather, I believe that this tape features
Arvil Freeman, a well-known bluegrass and old-time country
fiddler from North Carolina. Freeman used to play with longtime
Taylor friends Ralph Lewis (a former Blue Grass Boy from
the mid-1970s), Don Humphries, and Tom McKinney (among others)
in the Piney Mountain Boys (1967), and I suspect it is this group that
is featured on this reel playing with Tut; "Ralph" is mentioned on
