TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
Here we have yet another blazing hot show from the 1971 Who tour. This one was supposedly recorded on a very rainy day under less than perfect conditions. The previous source available was inferior to the one that was used here and was apparently recorded under a tarp! Above all, this is an audience recording that is definitely listenable and one that was certainly worthy of being remastered. As with the majority of audience recordings from this period, the level of bass or low-end frequencies present far overshadows the mid to high end frequencies, resulting in a muddy, compressed sound. I have therefore attempted to balance out the level of the frequency spectrum as accurately as possible. You'll notice that every track appears to have relatively the same sound quality save a few tracks on the second disc. Some sections of this recording, mostly isolated to a few tracks on the second disc, seem to have a lower sound quality than the rest of this recording. Consequently, I have tried to match the overall sound of these tracks to the rest of the recording as closely as possible. The alterations necessary to produce a clearer, brighter on these inferior tracks have created a fairly solid amount of noise. As usual, I have decided against using any form of noise reduction on the effected tracks as to maintain the sound of the recording itself. Fortunately, the bulk of this recording is of adequate sound quality and did not produce an amount of noise that would distract from the overall sound of the recording. One significant edit that I have made to this recording on all tracks is to make every track purely mono. The original source contained tracks with 2 slightly different channels of sound. The right channel, which was generally clearer and brighter than the left, has now become both channels and therefore produced a mono recording. Some people may wonder why I've eliminated the stereo field of the recording that would more accurately replicate the experience of hearing the performance coming off the stage. This is a reasonable inquiry to which I must reply that the left channel contained virtually the same instrument and vocal mix as the right channel but was noticably duller and muddier sounding. I therefore decided to eliminate this channel altogether. Apart from a few other minor adjustments, this short description details most of the work I have put into this recording. I hope you enjoy this show and hope that this version is an improvement upon the original! Long live rock!

Notes:

Approximate Length: 91m

A good audience recording that came to light in more recent years and was a major upgrade from
the fragmented version that previously existed. The cuts are fairly insignificant.

Many thanks to Siege72.

Siege's Sound Quality Guide: A good, almost complete audience recording with the bass a good
bit louder than the guitar. I fixed the speed problems (horrific by 'Magic Bus') as best I
could.

Siege's Details: The year's first U.S. tour opened with a memorable show in rainy weather —
fortunately this recording is many times better than the more common source, which was recorded
under a tarp and very fragmented. The set is still comprised of mostly new material, but a few
newer songs that were still included at the recent Sheffield show were dropped by this stage.
In their place are 'My Wife', the new Entwistle showpiece, and both 'Can't Explain' and
'Substitute', the latter inadvertently shortened to barely over a minute here. 'Bargain' is
becoming a great live number, despite Townshend trying to "sing" the synthesizer parts, and
'Behind Blue Eyes' is already a crowd favorite. Although 'Won't Get Fooled Again' had been
used as the set-closer earlier in the year, it's now moved to the seventh number in the act and
won't return to show-closing status for a few years. After a blistering version of 'Water',
the show finishes with 'My Generation' moving into 'Magic Bus' and what was reportedly a
Townshend smash-up of not one, but two guitars.
