I know a great deal about Doug Sahm. Originally a child prodigy in Austin(I believe), Texas, he was playing gigs at like 13 on Pedal Steel Guitar. In the 60's musical revolution, with a background in Blues, Country, Tex-Mex and a variety of other music including good old R+R, he went to norhern CA and formed a band, The Sir Douglas Quintet, which had a few hits in the 60's like, "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino". In 72 he had found his way back to texas and recorded a record with old friend Augie Meyers, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, David Bromberg and many other major artists of the day, and featured everything from Blues to Country, with a Duet with Dylan. He kicked around and toured with a group called "Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornadoes" in the 70's. The Drummer from Creedence Clearwater joined the band, and they put on a pretty good show, or they did about 76 that I saw. Doug didn't play much outside of Texas, until the formation of "The Texas Tornadoes" with Freddy Fender and Augie Meyers in the late 80's. They toured quite a bit, and were pretty good. Doug Passed away a year or 2 ago, after returning to his old blues roots music. Maybe this helps, it's just from memory. There is a 3 cd set from 1972 that is usually labeled among Deadheads as Jerry Garcia, Kreutzman, Leon Russell, and Doug Sahm is listed at the bottom. It was really a Doug Sahm gig that Jerry and Billy sat in on one Thanksgiving night when they were in Texas and a night off from touring. Keith Keith Bode [t.tunakebo@verizon.net] Fri 12/14/2001
