Taper notes: Continuing my Jazzfest appreciation series with BARN40, here's a different sort of Jazzfest experience -- Anders Osborne in front of a very intimate crowd at the (now-defunct) Tower Records just on the fringes of the French Quarter. One of the great things that most Jazzfest attendees never get to experience is the set of free intimate (but short) shows that are presented at the record stores on the "tweener" days between the 1st and 2nd weekend, and on the Monday after the 2nd weekend. Alas, Tower Records is no more, but The New Orelans Music Factory continues these showcase performances each year. So, to set the scene -- it's been a LONG, exhausting weekend....After having been out until all hours at Tipitina's the night before (See BARN38 & BARN39 for the Meters and Steve Kimock Band sets) -- until probably 7AM, I was determined to make it to my only opportunity to see one of my favorite N'Awlins performers do his thing (especially since he was hardly playing outside of NOLA at this point and I hadn't seen him in 2 years). Luckily this show wasn't TOO early in the afternoon, and it was a semi-short walk from our hotel to get there. So I just set up a few feet from the stage, and now 9 years later you guys get to hear. At the time he was promoting his current "Ash Wednesday Blues" CD, and this was a show in a record store, so this performance consists solely of songs from that disc. Not that this is a problem -- a few of these tunes have become true Anders classics -- in particular Stoned Drunk and Naked is one of his best live songs....and Ho-Di-Ko-Di is a hilarious love song with lyrics along the same lines as The Police's "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da", but contains the refrain "set my ass on fire". You have to love Anders for lyrical flourishes like these. This is before Anders had really developed into his current "guitar pyrotechnics" style, or really, maybe since it was a short showcase set, he kept the tunes tight, without much jamming. Unforunately Kirk Joseph was unable to make it to this show, and I have never seen Anders play with this drummer before or since, but he seems to have done a fine job. Keep your eyes peeled for more from my Jazzfest Appreciation Series -- it looks like it's going to be continuing for a little while. :-) Enjoy!
