Review:
Having missed their previous trip down south a few years back, I was pleased to see Belle and
Sebastian return to Melbourne rather quickly for a 30th anniversary celebration of If You're
Feeling Sinister, a place they hadn't travelled to for the 20th anniversary (I was a little
disappointed that they didn't have a matching Tigermilk show in Melbourne, although my wallet will
thank me for that!).

The show made for such a tender tribute to a beloved album, opening with a short clip from an
interview with the woman photographed for the cover thirty years ago. They played through the
record at a leisurely pace (Stuart joked that it was slower than the original album, one of his
many bits of banter throughout the night), taking advantage of the acoustics and the large ensemble
to let the music breathe in a very beautiful way, and accompanying it with some cute themed videos
for each song. After vanishing for a bit, they returned for a quick set of fan favourites,
including a very extended version of 'The Boy with the Arab Strap' with fans dancing in the aisles
and on the stage.

This was my first time at the Palais, a very pretty theatre in our beachside suburb of St Kilda,
and a rare trip to an all-seated venue for me. Unfortunately for my hopes of a consistent tape, I
kept having to stand up to look past the people in front of me, and then sit down again when I felt
like I could, and then get back up again - there's a few notable shifts in sound whenever I gave in
and stood up, bringing my mic with me (B&S fans are a... passionate lot, haha). Sorry about that,
but there should be at least one other tape from this show and it'll be doubtless be better than
this one. Hope you find something to like though.
