Agalli has these shows identified as March 5, 1986. The New Morning's official
website appears to have been recently revamped in 2026 with lists of many
historical shows. As of 2026, it has webpages indicating that Billy Cobham
performed at the New Morning on March 4 and 5, 1986 so it's also possible this is
from March 4. Note that the website incorrectly identifies the band name and
lineup as Cobham's "Glass Menagerie". That lineup was active in 1981/82.
We think there are two incomplete sets/shows here. Billy Cobham does say goodnight
at the end of Mozaik, so that seems to be the end of show 1. Show 2 is certainly
incomplete and agalli doesn't think Slow Body Poppin' would have been the first
song, which would mean show 1 isn't complete either. It's possible that separate
shows from March 4 and 5 were broadcast, but it's considerably more likely that
what we have comes from a broadcast of two shows/sets from the same day. It's
unclear which of show 1 or 2 would be the early or late shows.
Notes:
-I got the primary source for show 1 from lamarr, but its origin is unknown. The
mastering details for it are, of course, also unknown, but it sounds good and it
hasn't been hiss reduced. It was cut between most of its tracks. Hence, it was
missing some of Billy Cobham talking, the French DJ and a few secs of some songs.
-I had to remove small amounts of repeated material from many of the tracks at the
cuts of the primary source.
-I patched as much of the missing material as possible using agalli's cassette
source. This included the 2nd half of track 2 (~13 sec), between tracks 3/4 (~25
sec), end of track 4 (~30 msec), between tracks 4/5 (~5 sec), end of track 5 (~17
msec), start of track 7 (~5 sec), and track 8 (~3 mins).
-The primary source for show 1 is stereo. agalli's cassette source is basically
two-track mono. I phase corrected (MATLAB) the channel alignment of both sources.
-I automatically balanced the levels of both sources (MATLAB). I lowered the levels
of agalli's cassette source to approximately match the primary source.
-I speed corrected (MATLAB) because: the primary source started 0.5% slow and
gradually got faster, reaching 0.2% slow by the end of track 7. Tracks 8 and 9
were already close enough to the correct speed. The show 1 patches from agalli's
cassettes were running 2.5%-4.8% slow. Shmagofatz (late show) from agalli's
cassettes was 3.6% slow and it gradually got slower, with Unknown Jeromes ending
4.0% slow.
-I mixed the sources in Audacity. I had to make some manual repairs for some
digitally glitched sections (~20 msec) in track 8 from agalli's CD rip. I directly
spliced in the two patches that were msec duration. I used short (<0.5 sec)
crossfades for all the other patches.
