JEMS is pleased to revisit another master recording made by Ed F, longtime friend and co-conspirator of Mike Millard. Along with Barry Goldstein, the trio taped a treasure trove of SoCal concerts circa 1973-1993.
Ed F's recordings fall into three eras and categories. His early work is on a low-grade consumer cassette deck with a Radio Shack microphone and the quality varies from surprisingly good to mostly distorted. He upgraded his gear in the late '70s to a Uher deck (occasionally borrowed by Millard when his Nak 550 was broken) and Nakamichi CM-50 microphones and got many excellent results on cassette. In 1992, he switched to a Panasonic portable DAT recorder, which he paired with the Nak mics.
This recording uses the DAT rig to capture the Black Crowes on tour in support of their sophomore album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, which went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart.
The setlist is derived from that album and is predecessor Shake Your Money Maker, along with "A Generous Buzzard" jam as the lead in to "Thorn In My Pride," a cover of "Three Little Birds" and the b-side/non-album track "Bewildered."
Ed's pull is excellent, with punchy, full fidelity. The Crowes are playing near the peak of their powers and the crowd is understandably enthusiastic. Samples provided.
Thanks to our friend Ed F for making his historic master tape archive available to all and to mjk5510 for handling post production.
