Bob Bellerue + Katie Porter: Damned Piano & Eternities
Sat, Oct 10 | Epsilon Spires
Multidimensional, spectral drone magic intuitively created by Bass clarinetist Katie Porter and sound artist Bob Bellerue (halfnormal) using prepared piano and harmonic tones from wind instruments played within feedback systems. The live Improvisation will accompany THE MIRROR by Andrei Tarkovsky!
About the event
Eternities is an intuitive collaboration inspired by deep presence, resonant feedback, melodic drone, and overtone magic, in the fluid realm between intention and indeterminacy. Eternities' first album "Realness" was featured on the "Best Experimental Music on Bandcamp" list, saying "Both excel at creating widescreen audio fields. So it’s natural that working together would result in soundscapes that move and breathe as if in 3-D."
For this special event at Epsilon Spires, Katie and Bob are both bringing solo performances that they will present before their collaborative duo. Music will accompany projections of scenes from the film THE MIRROR by Andrei Tarkovsky! Doors open at 7pm, Performances begin at 7:15.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Katie Porter will be presenting one of her Flower Compositions, a graphic score system. This series of works was was first presented in her album "Conversation No. 1 / Collecting Rocks from the Places We've Been" using recorded bass clarinet alongside live playing.
The American Composers Forum put this album on their Our Top Contemporary Classical and Experimental Albums of 2025 list, saying "the album weaves through ambient drones and textured clarinet sounds with only brief pauses between ideas. The subtle introduction of distortions range from lightly jagged vibrato to multiphonics that oscillate between pure tones. We are gradually warmed by Porter’s movement between registers and able to analyze the wave of her sound; dark sustains of the bass clarinet’s lower register fold into points of tension and grit created by the overpressure and sharper ends of multiphonics. The result is an ethereal album that succinctly presents both clear and distorted versions of the clarinet, preserving its sweetness while introducing a brash quality to our ears."
Katie Porter is a clarinetist, performer/composer, writer, and artist. Her work is rooted in decades of experimental and community performance practices, where she explores how music can exist almost like landscapes or relationships, slowly altering our ability to perceive change, time, and space. Devoted to collaboration, Katie performs as Phase to Phase (with Lucio Capece), Eternities (with Bob Bellerue), MUD (with Anne Penders), MOONS (with Christine Tavolacci, Laura Cetilia, and Judith Berkson), and premiered works by many living composers including Phill Niblock, Sarah Hennies, Tristan Perich, Christian Wolff, Michael Pisaro, Eva-Maria Houben, and Teodora Stepancic. Katie's writings are published in Sound American, and her recent creative work can be heard in Brooklyn’s ISSUE Project Room archive, where she was 2024 Artist-in-Residence.
Bob Bellerue will present "Damned Piano" - he lays speakers and microphones on the strings of the grand piano to create feedback which rumbles and howls, like a ride down a near-freezing river Styx.
"This epic and at times over the top work fully delivers on its forthright title, which suggests the instrument in question at best deserves expletives and at worst warrants an exorcism. There’s no melodic ivory tinkling to be found here – Bellerue positions various objects on the body of the piano and its soundboard to draw out their resonant properties, then amplifies the results to cacophonous volumes. Over its four-part 64 minute duration, Damned Piano segues from looming, opaque, abraded drone workouts, to noise climaxes rippling with finely striated tonal detail, to extended passages of impenetrably dense frequencies, reverberating with seismic shudders." -The Wire
Bob Bellerue is a sound artist, experimental musician, curator, audio engineer and technical director based in Ridgewood NY.
