Chris Cacavas & The Slivers Of Hope, October 28, 1997, Alte Mlzerei, Regenburg, Germany
**Audience DAT-master, MWM 0050**
>> WITH SURPRISE GUEST SID GRIFFIN (LONG RYDERS, COAL PORTERS) <<
What a week:
Super Bowl !
Super Tuesday !
and now this one here...
lonetaper's upload # 50 !
SO THIS TORRENT HERE IS A VERY SPECIAL ONE.
THIS ONE HERE IS ABSOLUTELY UNRELEASED AND UNTRADED.
AND IT'S ONE OF MY 'TOP 5' CHRIS CACAVAS SHOWS...EVER!
I'd like to dedicate it to my friends hanwaker, hanno & maddrax,
founding members of the Crazy Chris Cacavas Commitee (4C's).
This recording here comes directly from the "Men With Microphones" archive.
"MWM" started in the 70ies in South Germany with analog recording equipment,
and at least two of them are still recording sometimes (since the 90ies on DAT,
and, lazy as we are, since lately with small, handheld WAV-recorders on SD-cards).
Is it really necessary to introduce our friend,
Mr. Chris Cacavas ?
MAYBE NOT IN A BETTER, EQUITABLE WORLD...
In a more fair and better world Chris would
be able to earn his living out of his music.
In a more fair and better world Chris would
be able to sell enough records and merchandise.
In a more fair and better world Chris would
be regularely in the US Billboard Charts,
and also in Germany's Musik Markt Charts.
In a more fair and better world Chris would
play in front of more than the usual 50 people...
...
WHAT ? YOU ARE TIRED OF READING THIS HERE ?
You know hundreds, thousands of gifted musicians
that never had a chance, never made it ?
ME TOO ! LOTTA SAD STORIES !
WHY ??

BECAUSE IT'S A FUCKED UP WORLD !

Chris Cacavas: Anonymous - What the critics say
Anonymous Workaholic
Quiet songwriting at the highest level. But Chris Cacavas is not a star.
He could always rely on the fact that surprised critics would applaud him - whether
it was for Green On Red's psychedelic folk rock or his appearances as guest musician
on records by Steve Wynn or Giant Sand. So no one should be surprised by "Anonymous",
Cacavas' first solo album in eight years. And yet... Cacavas, who lives in California,
this time has slowed down a little in order to give his careful swinging melodies more
space and to establish a fine tuned arrangement. The best example probably is the epic
"Anonymous" which appears on the ME/Sounds compilation CD: The flood of Crazy-Horse-guitars
has ebbed away and now the fragile song structures are lying open like starfish washed
ashore on a white beach. "Of course I haven't radically changed my concept," Cacavas
emphasizes, but: "It was astonishing how intuitively and creatively these recordings
were made." Each of these 13 songs stands for timeless quality.
German 'Musikexpress/Sounds', August 1997, p. 21 (translation: Derk Bienen).
Folk'n'Roll
Dear reader, in case you haven't yet bought the one folk'n'roll record you buy every
year - stop searching and take this one. You won't need another one. With the help of
guests like Steve Wynn (as co-producer) and Jane Scarpantoni (inevitable if it gets to
playing cello on a record of the genre) Chris Cacavas managed to make this marvelous
record like a thundercloudy summer day that we had been waiting for so badly.
'Anonymous' is the Green On Red founder's fifth album since he left the influential
psych-country-band in 1992 and his first one without his band Junkyard Love. No wonder
that this record is somewhat quieter than 'New Improved Pain' or the masterpiece
'Pale Blond Hell'. But that doesn't reduce the intensity and heaviness of his songs.
On this record you're getting the essence of Chris Cacavas - his high voice which sounds
a little lamenting but never desperate, lyrics full of irony dry like a desert, wonderful
ballads ("Sullen"), rough psych'n'country-rock ("Anonymous", "You Gonna Pay") which
should make feel (every fan of) Neil Young happy, complicated guitar solos, and simple
but catchy melodies. What more could you wish from a singer/songwriter? (5 out of 6 stars)
Albert Koch, German 'Musikexpress/Sounds', August 1997, p. 50 (translation: Derk Bienen).
ABOUT THIS CONCERT HERE:
Early 1997 Chris formed a new band, together with Ed Kampwirth on bass and Brandon Laws
on drums. They called themselfes "The Chris Cacavas Commitee", and their first release
was a 7"-vinyl single, limited to 500 copies, titled "You Ruined It" with two songs:
"Open Your Ears" and "Payback". For their upcoming "Anonymous"-European Tour 1997
Chris asked an old friend, Chris Holiman, a legend from Tucson, AZ. If you missed
him in your music collection, please check him out, his bands "River Roses" and
"35 Summers" are essential!
The band performed the first show as a trio at Zechenstudio in Bochum:
THE CHRIS CACAVAS COMMITEE
It was reported that Mr. Holiman was ill, after his recovery they named themselfes:
THE CHRIS CACAVAS COMMITEE w/ CHRIS HOLIMAN
And somewhere later on this tour they changed the name of the band to:
Chris Cacavas & The Slivers Of Hope
Tour schedule was Marburg, Cafe Trauma on October 27, and Dresden, Star-Club on October 29.
Between both gigs they rocked the house (and an enthusiastic crowd !) at Regensburg's
Alte Mlzerei. And i had a surprise for them. Sid Griffin from the legendary Long Ryders
stayed for a few days at my home during his tour, and we both took the chance to visit
Mr. Cacavas and the boys. Sid and Chris, real good friends since early 80ies, and their bands
Long Ryders and Green On Red had been the backbone of the so-called "Paisley Underground",
together with Dream Syndicate, True West, and a few more. Together with Steve Wynn and
Dan Stuart they formed the legendary "Danny & Dusty", with a few liveshows and one album
(talking about 1997 ! I sure know last years reunion, the albums and liveconcerts...).
Not having seen each other for a couple of years, both had to exchange lots of stories
and jokes...and missed the soundcheck. For me as hardcore-fan a dream came true, when they
jammed a few songs together at the end of the concert...kinda small Danny & Dusty-reunion.
The real funny thing was, that Edgar (Mr. Blue Rose) copied my idea and drove with Steve Wynn
to Chris' show at Jubez, Karlsruhe, to get another small D&D-reunion within one week !
NOT TO FORGET:
Another highlight of this night here was the opening act:
MUELLER or MLLER, but this whacky story comes along with
the torrent of E-Werk, Erlangen (November 7, 1997)...later this year.
