5.Tapers Notes
Recorded far off-center and outside both speaker arrays, I had to point the microphones a little bit inward to cut out the sound bouncing back from the walls. The low end is super thick and a bit muddy for a concert hall. I really like the thick bass guitar and heavy kick drum, but I will definitely have to balance them out in post-production.

Today's Deep Purple has three original MK2 members: Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice, with Simon McBride on guitar and Don Airey on keyboards filling the shoes of Ritchie Blackmore and the late Jon Lord.

I am not a big fan of either of the former original members, Richie and Jon. But I still miss Ritchie's occasional hiccups during fast licks, and Jon's organ, which was so grandiose and holy that it made me look around to see if Dracula was coming.

In many ways, Simon McBride is a far superior musician. He has the professional integrity to stay true to the original arrangements, avoiding any self-indulgent or risky attempts to reinvent them. He knows exactly what the audience wants and delivers. Ultimately. his solo on 'Smoke on the Water' for example sounds way better than Ritchie's messy performances during his final years with the band.

Jon's heavy, distorted, blues-meets-classical style is one of a kind.
Don is a versatile session giant who perfected the songs of multiple legendary bands (Ozzy, Rainbow; Whitesnake). He is able to easily replicate Jon's sound and incorporate advanced, modern
synthesizer textures. Don truly blends classic organ crunch with cinematic synthesizer solos.

It's safe to say that today's Deep Purple delivers a highly professional and crowd-pleasing performance. With Ian Gillan and Roger Glover having reached the milestone age of 80, Ian may no longer hit the soaring highs of 'Child in Time' and now drops the key a few steps for certain tracks. Yet, his voice remains fantastic; nobody holds a candle to his delivery on deep, emotional tracks like 'When a Blind Man Cries' or 'Into the Fire.' Similarly, while 78-year-old Ian Paice might not power through 'Burn' like he used to, he still keeps a rock-solid groove on 'Black Night.' I highly recommend catching them live if they visit your city. Go not out of nostalgia for a 'last chance,' but because it's still an incredible show."
