The mid-1980s were a quiet but important transitional phase in Don McLeans career. While he wasnt releasing major new albums or touring heavily, he was still active as a performer and remained a respected figure in folk and pop music.
Concert activity in the mid-80s was sporadic rather than structured, with McLean performing occasional concerts in the U.S., Canada, and abroad. This aligns with his broader career pattern after his major 1970s success, where he shifted toward selective touring rather than continuous road work.
He spent this period refining his live performances, occasionally appearing at festivals, casinos, and university venues. His focus was on craft, consistency, and connection with audiences, rather than chasing chart success.
This very good first-generation capture comes from my old friend Mauro R's archives and is a rare mid-1980's full band show, the band McLean put together is outstanding.
Based on the included show review McLean played two shows on this night but whether this is the early or late show is unknown (he played the next night as well). There was a portion at the end of the show (not included) where TM is explaining to someone how to use is recorder, possibly to record the late show or the next night's performance? We'll never know unless more surfaces from this wonderful two night stand.
Thanks to Mauro for access to all the great shows we've released and shows yet to come. Goody handled pitch guidance with his usual masterful touch.
