5. Taper’s memo

I recorded the entire show from a seat that wasn’t perfect, but still a big improvement over the previous night’s—just a few rows forward and bit off-center from the venue’s so-called sweet-sounding sections. Despite its iconic status and striking appearance to both performers and fans, Budokan Hall isn’t known for great acoustics. Sound tends to bounce off the floor and hollow out toward the back. The speaker stacks were also hung a bit higher than usual, angled more toward the second-tier seats. As a result, the structurally "sweet" spots are quite limited. This time, I taped from a spot closer to those areas and aimed the Schoeps MK4s directly at the main speaker stacks. I’d learned the hard way: you just can’t expect decent sound from the decorative on-stage speakers. So this is essentially a stack-focused recording.

This was the fourth night of Clapton’s eight-night residency in Tokyo. These days, he doesn’t perform on consecutive nights and typically takes a day or two off between shows—even at the same venue. Since he had just played the night before, I expected he might be a bit more relaxed or even slightly unfocused, as I’ve noticed in some shows on past tours. But to my surprise, his performance was rock-solid and full of energy. I was especially impressed by how strong and memorable the latter part of the set was—from “Badge” through the encore—even though those are his usual greatest hits. I’ve found myself returning to this recording quite a bit. “Old Love” stretched out to over 12 minutes, and not once did it feel too long or repetitive. Tim Carmon’s performance was absolutely fantastic. I often use Crossroads as a benchmark to gauge his playing—and this time, it was bursting with energy and adrenaline. He really delivered.

This was one of those special nights. After the show, I found myself thinking how glad I was to have recorded it. I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
