In 2004, Etta James was in the midst of a highly regarded late-career renaissance. She had recently won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for Let's Roll, and her live shows from this era were known for powerful blues, soul, and gospel-infused vocals.

Strynger gives us an excellent capture of one of Etta James's performances from the 2004 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Etta delivers a supercharged set, seemingly raising her intensity another level, perhaps inspired by the sudden downpour that sent a much larger crowd rushing into the shelter of the covered performance area. The opening five-minute "Announcements" track documents the organizers' efforts to clear the aisles and accommodate the influx of people seeking cover, setting the scene and preserving the unique atmosphere of the moment.

This is a brilliant late-career Etta performance wonderfully captured by strynger.
