Grin
1974-03-20 ::: Northampton, Northampton County, Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, USA
The Roxy Theatre ::: 7:30pm Early Show ::: 2004 Main Street ::: M?-AUD

End of main set :::
01. You're The Weight

Encore :::
02. Celebration(?*)

Total Time ::: 10:39

::: VG- non-hi-fi but digestible, Grinable audio (Mk2 has more to offer). Check samples hike takin', moss gathering, breathlessness abatement.
::: Warts (YES!) : Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Some level of distortion. #01 starts up directly at the 1st note (all there). Mk1 is muffled & somewhat distant. The Mk2 brings the sound to life somewhat but is somewhat hissy - neither one is a picnic.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is the Mk1 NO EQorNR version. The slightly improved Mk2 WITH EQ+NR version is available elsewhere.
::: Tape said"1974-04-17 Roxy Early&Late". Northampton Roxy venue confirmed by WSAN DJ talk at start of Late Show.
::: DATE CORRECTION to 1974-03-20 to match newspaper advertisements (info courtesy of DIMER gv0000).
::: Tail end of show, unknown what's missing or if rest was taped. Do you have more &/or an upgrade of either Early or Late shows?
::: NOT same version of"You're The Weight"as Late Show tape from same night (as in, this is NOT the conclusion of the Late show).
::: Nils 1st night at The Roxy, less than 3 months before Grin's farewell gig in Washington,DC 1974-06-08.
::: Most recent LP was 4th&last"Gone Crazy".Wikipedia says issued Oct.'73, but 1973-11-24 is 1st"Cash Box"review&"Billboard"listing.
::: Part of live WSAN-FM"Concert Series" (but show not broadcast on the radio). Opening band unknown. Do you remember?
::: (*) #12 unissued song sometimes titled "Thunderbird", but is likely "Celebration". Anyone know for sure?
::: "So long as Grin keeps recording, there will be reason to smile." (source unknown '71 1st LP review).
::: Astonishing/sadly, Grin still doesn't even have their own Wikipedia page, nor gets more than a single paragraph in Nils' entry. WTF?
::: WATCH THIS & GRIN - complete with trampoline flip! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS26vzLjhrk
::: Interesting: Seems album/CD"You're The Weight"version was apparently sped up somewhat on the master, it's at 223/446 whereas usually Nils plays it in 440.

Recording Information ::: unknown mono tape recorder/microphone -> master tape -> unknown analog-only generations -> unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2020-02-14 ::: unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset (NOT to normalize volume), channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, clap, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, #01 +3.6%, #02 +3.45% pitch (speed) fixes with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, differential equalisation to reduce muffling + lite noise reduction to reduce the resultant hiss (somewhat)] (NOTE: only used better channel of mono recording after patches) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2021-12-xx.

<DISCLAIMER: 2 of my Grin tapes were badly labeled. Slight chance that "Celebration"+"You're The Weight" I'm outing here as 1974-03-20 Northampton,PA Roxy Early Show are actually the 2 final trax from 1974-03-xx Towson,MD Loch Raven High School, but after careful examination I decided they probably were from a separate show. Also, if they are NOT the Roxy trax, then it would appear that tape was entirely missing something written on the label. After 50 years & holding this project up in part due to that problem, it's going out as you see it. If someone can produce their version/tape of either show & confirm or tell us what's up, cool, but in the meantime, enjoy the chance to finally hear this material. DISCLAIMER OUT>

Line-up ::: Nils Hilmer Lofgren - electric guitar, piano, vocals // Tommy Lofgren - electric guitar, vocals // Bob Gordon - electric bass, vocals // Bob Berberich - drums, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 590 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! THANKS to DIMERS elegymart, Syrinx, AlexPhoenix, TheBigA for their GRIN input in various ways. Thanks to DIMER gv0000 for his ever-helpful research assistance. ::: Corrections welcome ::: Only two tracks, but a fine performance of "You're The Weight", plus the unreleased song, "Celebration", so enough not to scratch your head about. Not like you have 200 Grin shows to listen to (Do you?). Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
