This was a train wreck of a show. The band was not loud enough, and the sound system was "rebooted" at least twice during the performance. The opening songs, before James Brown came on, dragged on for too long, and then JB appeared with a tacky group of dancers who were unrehearsed and terrible. His performance was as uneven as the volume in the arena. For some reason, Al Sharpton made an appearance and was booed (can you say Tawana Brawley? Sure you can.) All of this is evident from the tape, and the accompanying newspaper articles, and to top it off, someone in the crowd started yelling "sit down" just before the band started Get On Up.
This is, also, not the best recording, which is at least mostly the venue's and the band's fault. It's also incomplete. Throw in a rowdy, disappointed crowd and uneven acoustics, and this recording is more for posterity than casual listening. But, it appears not to circulate, and it deserves to be remembered.
Enjoy!
