From the 5th Annual Riverblues Festival. The tape was dated July 26 but JL Hooker played on Saturday the 25th.

This is an excellent audience recording, up front and close, with excellent dynamics and relatively little audience noise except for applause at the start and end of each song. Occasionally, the taper moves and the stereo field changes a bit, though. The first 25 seconds are mono, as is a small segment in the middle of the show where the right channel dropped out briefly.

Track 5, "Blues Around Me Bed" is probably not the right title. That lyrics appears in many blues songs (e.g., Trixe Blues, Mama's Got The Blues), none of which are performed here.


John Lee Hooker performed with the Coast to Coast Blues Band which was about nine musicians at this time. Some of them are identified during Rock Steady.

The unidentified opening act is included here as well, and the singer is named at about 4:50 into track 3. The transition to JL Hooker's set is seamless and thus this seems to be an unannounced "filler" set between John Mayall and John Lee Hooker, perhaps while the stage was reset. This artist's name appears in no newspaper article or other list of acts at the festival; at least, not in performance order. Perhaps someone can identify it?
