Volume #21 in this long-running Kinks collector series uncovers another powerful chapter in the band�s evolution. By 1980, The Kinks had fully leaned into their transformation into a hard-edged arena rock act, fueled by the June release of One for the Road. The concerts from this period were still anchored in Low Budget material, but the performances carried a new edge - songs stretched out, tempos pushed harder, and extended guitar solos dominated this era.

The source tape for this show is assembled from two different audience recordings. The first source, used through roughly the first third of �Low Budget,� is listenable but lacks definition. At one minute and twenty seconds into �Low Budget,� the tape switches to a second source for the remainder of the concert. This second recording is a substantial upgrade, offering noticeably better clarity and overall sound quality.

Not knowing the provenance of the sources used, I was initially skeptical that the second tape was truly what it claimed to be. Over the years I�ve encountered plenty of recordings�by many artists�where patches were quietly lifted from entirely different shows. However, about halfway through the concert Ray mentions Miami, which confirms that we�re indeed hearing the complete Sunrise performance. And it�s a strong one.

As with many releases in this series, this particular show appears to have been less circulated during the torrent era.
