It’s a bit like going to Mordor. No-one wants to make the trip but, sometimes it becomes unavoidable. Sunday night, me & Tempusfugit (TF) (Modern-day Dodo & Dimbo Baggins) make the long and treacherous trip South.

Whilst the Tyne/Wear divide will forever be a source of “leg-pulling”, there are a couple of things worthy of some credit. Firstly, they love their music in these parts…always have (the late (great) Geoff Docherty’s "A Promoter’s Tale" is an excellent read and underlines this point well). We’ve also met some ardent fans from Wearside - really nice, good people. Secondly, The Fire Station is a brilliant venue, one of our favourites. As you might guess, a repurposed former fire station - well thought through, marvellous hall and thoroughly nice staff.

Second outing in three days…we’re always up for seconds.

Set-wise…same as Hexham, although it’s a different energy in The Fire Station. More people, more response and a different delivery from the band. Crowd are very “up for it” tonight, and with a number of “newbies” it seems. How do we deduce that? Me & TF gauge it by the response to Rod’s jokes. Most are…”long-serving classics”. Loud laughter suggests a lot of people are hearing them for the first time.

Interesting to hear the comments from one or two of the attendees (via a Geordie/mackem translation app) - marvelling at Rod’s bluesy guitar playing for example, “hushed wows” at the end of tunes (could live without the not-so-hushed “woos”, though).

On tonight’s evidence, whether you’re a first-timer or are showing “symptoms” from having been a long-term devotee, the band enjoy continued recognition & relevance, and also continue to grow in popularity.
