Here's Dave's "introduction" to Lucinda Williams - 2001 "Essence" Tour Compilation:

LUCINDA WILLIAMS: 2001 "ESSENCE" TOUR COMPILATION
This compilation was chosen from a collection of 29 recordings, 22 of which ended up making the cut. I tried to use as many different dates as possible but the main criteria was the sound had to be outstanding, all else was secondary. Luckily there are some pretty talented tapers among us who enjoy Lucinda and captured her sound pretty well through out the tour.

I'm not sure if this is a complete compilation of all the songs she performed on the tour because I did not have access to a set list for every show on the tour, but every song I had access to is represented in this collection.

The first disc is a collection of her standard set list in the order she most often played through out the tour. She didn't vary it much from night to night so this disc took the longest time for me to compile because there were more versions of the songs for me to listen and choose from. I hope you all enjoy the versions I selected.

The first seven tracks of disc two are a tribute to the victims of the September 11th tragedy. All tracks were recorded after 9/11 except one; Broken Butterflies recorded on 8/2. The rest of the tracks on the disc were her more "blues" type numbers. The artwork for this disc was modified from the other two discs to reflect the tribute.

The third an final disc is made up of tour rarities and encores. It also features songs from the show she did with her father, poet Miller Williams. Bo Ramsey accompanies Lucinda, along with the Duquesne Wind Symphony on the 13th track Something About What Happens When We talk. It ends with Elvis Costello and Lucinda singing Blue, the only song repeated on the Compilation.

The compilation was made to sound like one show and there are no gaps on my master so all copies should be dubbed DAO to get the full enjoyment of this set. "Lookout Joe" Stewart worked his magic to blend the tracks and even out the levels so we all owe him a nod. Outstanding job Joe!

The artwork is designed for a two disc jewel to fit disc one and three. Disc two should stand alone in its single jewel box in honor of the victims of 9/11. Thanks to Harry O and his great trade and art site. I also want to thank Jack Rogers for his help with the font and titling work.

Lastly I would like to thank all the anonymous tapers and people from "Rust" and the Yahoo Lucinda site that traded all these great shows to me. Without the group help this compilation would not have been possible.

Please remember this show is for trading only. Please don't profit from it. The only one who should profit from the music is the artist herself. Respect the artist!

Enjoy!
