I have never seen any incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd in my life and they've
always been a bucketlist concert. Obviously, the original members are gone,
so the sanctioned tribute is the next best thing featuring Ronnie's younger
brother, Johnny Van Zant on lead vocals. I'm a massive fan of Damon Johnson
(from Brother Cane), so seeing him on lead guitar was quite the thrill, as
well! While I am so used to hearing the original studio versions of these
legendary tracks, I really enjoyed hearing this band giving them a second
life. "Simple Man" was easily my favorite of the night followed by "Tuesday's
Gone" (which featured a tearful tribute to the late Gary Rossington on the
big screen)! The closing performance of "Free Bird" was absolutely magical
as it featured Ronnie's vocals (Johnny left the stage after the first verse/
chorus) with video of Ronnie on screen singing with the band playing live.
If you're a casual fan (like I am) and want to see these songs live (at least
once in your lifetime!), I cannot recommend them highly enough! The crowd did
not seem as into it as I thought they would've been, but I blame the heat (it
was 90, humid, muggy and the lawn did get rained on a bit). Johnny tried his
best to keep the audience engaged, sometimes having to repeat himself as well
as asking for louder applause. Lame crowd aside, this was such a great show
and I'm so glad I recorded it for future playback years down the road.
