Here's a fine sounding show from the 2nd incarnation of the "80's MO. 2nd incarnation because Jim Beard had replaced Mitch Forman on keys, and JM had seemingly abandoned the guitar synth for straight electric and acoustic playing at these shows. They were also featuring songs from their 2nd album, Adventures in Radioland, along with some things from Bill Evans and Jim Beard. I can't recall where the track 'It's Up to You' comes from, but if anyone has a better memory than I do, please chime in in the comments. Guessing this show has been shared here before, but it's not here at the moment and should make a nice freeloader grab.
The ever restless JM would soon go acoustic again in duos and trios with the likes of Jonas Hellborg, Kai Eckhardt, and Dominique DiPiazza on bass along with Trilok Gurtu on percussion in the late 80's and early 90's. I personally thought this MO was a great group for this particular time period, and that comparisons to the mighty MO's from the early to mid 70's missed the point. Music had moved on, and this band was right there with the best of the 80's fusioneers like Steps Ahead, the 80's Metheny Group, Tribal Tech; Mike Stern/Bob Berg; the Zawinul Syndicate, France's Sixun and others.
I got this in a snail mail trade of cd-r's, so thanks to the trader who made it available to me, and to whoever first put it into circulation. Please support these great artists by purchasing their commercially available material and paying to see them live (when that happens again!). In the meantime, John just put up a "name your own price" new version of the first MO's 'You Know, You Know' played with his 4th Dimension for the Music Cares foundation that's helping players unable to gig make ends meet during the pandemic. That video and audio download is on his bandcamp site.
