Description:

Rockige Jethro-Tull-Songs: Locomotive Breath schnauft durchs Heimathaus Twist

Twist.

I Want You (Shes So Heavy).

Rocking Jethro Tull songs: Locomotive Breath puffs through the Heimathaus Twist

Twist. At his third gig at the Heimathaus Twist, Mr. Martin Lancelot Barre once again thrilled his fan base with his virtuoso guitar playing.

Barre is listed in music journals as one of the world's 20 best guitarists, and the 72-year-old multi-instrumentalist proved once again that this title is well deserved in his packed home town. Many Jethro Tull fans made the pilgrimage to Emsland to hear the legendary prog rock band's songs rearranged by Martin Barre. Martin was Jethro Tull's guitarist for 49 years and was considered the bandleader of frontman and flutist Ian Anderson. Barre won a Grammy in 1988 for his guitar playing on the album Crest of a Knave. In addition to his successful time with Jethro Tull, he shared the stage with artists such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Gary Moore, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac.

The rockier arrangements of the well-known Tull numbers, which have an acoustic character in their original form, were interesting, and the Martin Barre Band presented some very rocking Tull arrangements in a soft guise. Always present and defining the concert was the incredibly virtuosic and multifaceted guitar playing of master Barre. Bassist Alan Thompson plays a deep, pumping bass, and singer Dan Crisp proves to be the ideal second guitarist. Jonathan Joseph [meaning: Darby Todd] drums powerfully and dynamically.

They kicked off with a rocking version of Minstrel in the Gallery, seamlessly followed by Steel Monkey, a typical '80s rock number, and then a juicy blues song penned by Bobby Parker. Martin's own songs also really rock, such as Back to Steel. But the 72-year-old is clearly struggling with the enormous heat on the stage of the Heimathaus. Again and again, he has to wipe his sweat-drenched and fogged-up glasses. So he decides to take off his glasses, blinks sheepishly, but then beams again during the next guitar solo. Barre then reveals to the Twister audience that he would very much like to be the guitarist in a Beatles cover band and treats them to Eleanor Rigby and I Want You (She's So Heavy). Barre plays Robert Johnson's Cross Road Blues as the only acoustic piece on the mandolin, and Tull folk fans would have liked to hear a few more numbers like that.

The versions of rare Tull songs such as Sea Lion [meaning: Sealion] and Nothing to Say are powerful. The version of Fat Man is complex and the arrangement of Teacher is magnificent. The band performs the originally purely acoustic song Skating Away as a hard rock number. And, of course, the acclaimed encore Lokomotive Breath steams through the Mllerhaus, and with Aqualung the temperature rises to what feels like 50 degrees. A hot but great evening at the Heimathaus Twist.

Jewelry box

After the concert, I spotted a small red jewelry box at the merch stand, with guitar strings and a pick mounted inside. When I asked about it, I was told that Martin Barre had made it himself he sometimes creates these little keepsakes for fans using the guitar strings from his previous show. So I bought the piece and asked Martin if he would sign the inside of the lid for me, which he kindly did.
