Day 3 and I was tired. At least I knew the routine and got on my way a bit early. That
gave me some extra time and got in a bit quicker. All easy, and actually went in rigged
up. Easier setting up outside when there is no worry getting gear in. Food and water in
my pockets and completely self contained. First band was Youssou N'dour who I really
wanted to see. Last time I saw him was with Peter Gabriel many years ago. This was an
excellent set that concluded with Shakin' The Tree. The crowd was full and people were
really enjoying it too. He seemed to lose track of time or thought he was doing 60 minutes
rather than 75. That meant we got to 72 minutes that allowed me enough time to get to
Pat Matheny with two minutes to spare. Just as I arrive they announce the artist has
requested no phones, recording or videos. Well, I didn't have time to take it off and
put it away so I guess I had to record. Hahaha. The set was on fire. Was basically a
jazz jam session. I couldn't get over Pat's hair. When I saw him at Ronnie Scott's a
few years ago his hair was short. Now its long and grey and almost looked like a dead
racoon on his head. I had to zoom in with my phone to be sure. After the set I had
45 minutes to rest the legs and eat so I found spot in the Maas stage until the next set
started. The next set was a younger reggae artist named Original Koffee. Musically
they were good but I don't need dancers. They add nothing to the music and in this case
were annoying. She is young but really has the reggae vibe and I would see her again.
Finally I had a bit of a break before the Aly Venable set. I found the Mississippi Stage
just as the last band was finishing and grabbed my spot on the front corner of the
soundboard. They came out to soundcheck and Aly looked like she was channeling her
Janis Joplin vibe with her dress and the band was jamming some Led Zeppelin. I was ready
for that. After they soundcheck two songs they take a break for 5 minutes and then come
out and play with the same Janis vibe. She has grown us since the last time I saw her.
Once her set ended I quickly too off to metro station and made the same train as the
night before. I checked the app and saw the train from Rotterdam was delayed more than
six minutes which would miss the connection so I pivoted to the local train that stopped
at my station. I made it home just before midnight and would call the festival a success.
