Peter Erskine Quartet,
Jazz Nights,
Palazzo Casalini,
Rovigo,
Italy,
15 July 2023
Here's a concert I recorded a couple of years ago that I always meant to share but somehow forgot to. It's one of the shows I recorded at the Rovigo Jazz Nights festival. The concerts are always free entrance, and the location is very suggestive and intimate: the musicians play right in front of a villa.
Peter Erskine is certainly one of the greatest drummers in the world. I've always loved his playing but never got around to listening to his solo work before this concert. I was seriously impressed and, of course, it was a thrill getting the chance to hear him play live in front of my eyes. He was also a great host for the evening, introducing the music with a lot of humility and good humor. The rest of the band was no slouch either: I particularly enjoyed Garzone's soloing.
I really like how this recording came out, and I hope you like it too: everything sounds lively and balanced. However, you will certainly notice a constant noise around 10k: that's not of electronic nature, it's crickets and cicadas! They somehow managed to sneak into every recording I made at that venue. I tried filtering them out, but it made everything else sound worse, so they're staying. Other than that, I think it sounds pretty great. Just imagine yourself enjoying the concert on a hot summer night in front of a beautiful Italian villa (and be thankful it wasn't the mosquitos)!
