** Introduction in English and German **

There are those moments that a Pink Floyd fan waits for his entire life. They’re the moments that have you scouring the internet every day, reading forums, and browsing eBay for cassettes in search of a better version of a recording, a new recording, and in some cases even a completely new show. These moments are rare and are becoming even rarer, but sometimes we get lucky and our patience is rewarded.

This is one of those moments.

A long-time member of the Y! and R&D community has decided, after almost exactly 50 years, to release a tape he unearthed many years ago.

You can read the incredible story behind this tape from the forum member, a tale full of coincidences, good intuition, good timing, and trust.

We are grateful and happy that we were able to follow the process of editing and releasing this tape as part of a very small group, and we thank the owner of the recording for the trust he has placed in us.

We are delighted to see how the community is receiving this release. For us, it was always clear that JFE should edit the tape, as he has been one of the best in this field for years, if not THE best. A thousand thanks also to him for his dedicated work.

An “international production” that began in Germany and would not have been possible without the passion of some Floyd fans worldwide.

** Jimfisheye's mastering notes **

This is a mono recording with unknown lineage. The CDR source has a lot of attention to detail from analog source handling to proper digital levels and editing. There's a broadcast aesthetic that includes turning up the quieter parts and pulling some of the more blown out louder parts back. Audience sections are trimmed and this has a produced flair to it. At the same time the sound still has a shrill hi midrange especially in the louder parts. A hallmark of distorted recordings of loud events. I can only speculate if any shrillness was exaggerated by earlier eq decisions. The recording of set 1 up to the cut in Brain Damage is lower fidelity than the rest of the recording and has a brightness around 5k that is not present in set 2 which sounds like it might be an eq boost addressing the lower fidelity element. While other resonances, whistles, and hums are consistent in both sets.

The problem with turning the quiet parts up is the effect of the big dropout when the music is supposed to be kicking back in strong. If the loud parts are nothing but shrill distorted sound, then something has to be done of course, but this recording is surprisingly dynamic and intact even in the louder parts. This sounds like it's recorded close to the stage. The front (stage) quad speaker audio is loud and close in the recording. There are some moments where you hear Rick's keyboard soloing get suddenly louder (coming out the front, on stage quad speaker) and then get distant sounding with room echo as he pans himself around the room. Someone in the audience mentions the quadraphonic sound.

I mastered this for the most natural sound possible from the recording. No damaging moves for surface level hype. Normalized the volume lurches and pronounced high mids. Reduced the excessive rumble and brought the bass end back into balance. I use Reaper DAW, iZotopeRX spectral editor, and some Waves and UA plugins. I created the tape flip patch in Brain Damage using Roger's vocal from the previous night (Apr 23rd).
