First off, other notes by Dave T., the seeder....
"this one will take some explaining so here goes.with the great help of taper pat and matt s., i'm proud to offer the most complete and best generation recordings available of the famous grateful dead bust benefit.
this amazing concert took place at winterland in s.f. on feb.23,1970 and featured; jefferson airplane, quicksilver messenger service, santana, it's a beautiful day and dan hicks and his hot licks.
these recordings were mastered on uher reels by harvey kaslow.most of this show has gotten around for a long time but it was time to do it as right as possible.
first off, nothing of dan hicks' set seems to exist in collector's hands.second, only 4 songs of santana circulates.next we have the very well known quicksilver set during the era of the 6 pc. lineup including nicky hopkins.last, we have the airplane set and the most confusing of this lot.as the new transfer was taken from reel copies directly from harvey's masters, i found it extremely odd that my old reel copy had 1 more song and actually seemed a little better quality at certain points and was in adifferent order.so rather than try to patch the version i was just sent with my copy, i decided to include both complete versions here.
that way, you can all decide for yourselves which versions to keep.you can tell they are all sourced from the same tape but why i had an extra track and better sound on some tracks i just can't explain.the it's a beautiful day set is from a 4th gen cassette and doesn't circulate but upon listening, you'll be able to tell it all originated from the same source.all in all, it's a great quality show of some classic bay area bands.all of this confusing info along with the setlists and all lineage info is in the file.
enjoy,
dave"
Since the post, this fact was brought to light by rbbert,
"To clear up some confusion, the Greasy Heart and Ballad of You & Me & Poohneil are not on Pat's tapes because I didn't copy them. The battery for the Uher began failing in Greasy Heart and was pretty much gone for Poohneil, so I left them off the tape I made for Pat. Pat's reels are directly off the 5" mono master reels.
At earlier times, Harv had made copies for people of these shows, which were Master reel > reel > reel, >?; that is, he made a reel for his use (what he called a "copy master"), and then made copies of that for other people. It was all reel-to-reel in those days, almost no one used cassettes yet.
No I don't have access to any of those tapes any more. In fact, the Airplane is the only stuff I kept for myself, same gen as Pat's reels."
Giving light that version 2 of the Jefferson Airplane set is just as good as the known lineage one that version 1 has. I decided to give a good hard listen to both side by side. Version 2 wins because it had slightly better high end plus it had the missing tracks. Lastly, since I don't have a DVD burner, fitting it the night would fit snug on two data CDRs, I dropped version 1.
NOTHING else was changed.
Enjoy this amazing piece of AUD history!
All the best,
-Tom Shyman
