Well, a few remarks Id like to make with reference to this torrent.
1. First of all, I want to dedicate this recording to a few people who amazingly patiently guided me through the process of actually taping a show. I live in an area distant from the usual venues at which top groups perform, so dont get much chance to practice taping skillsand although anyone can record a show if they try, there definitely is a significant learning curve. So, a BIG thank you goes to Seneca, Ross and Eric!
2. The evening did not start out auspiciously.there was a major thunderstorm beginning two hours before the show, so entry to the venue was delayed. We all got drenched awaiting the process of getting through the bag check and scanning of the tickets per the LiveNation app. Fortunately, however, although Modern English started a bit late, it stopped raining, and we got through their set, then the Soft Cell set, and finally the highlight 1.5 hour Simple Minds show.
3. This show was unique in a remarkable wayJim started off with the usual Hello Atlanta, but at the start of Let There Be Love, he says What a pleasure it is to be back in Athens, Georgia, its been a long time. The audience figured he was playing with us. However, he later again mentioned Athens. It ends up that Simple Minds has NEVER played in Athens, Georgia (home of the University of Georgia). They performed in Athens, Greece twice in the distant past. Someone handed him a large piece of paper which he clutched to his chest, and he then shared its significance -- it was asking him to confirm that he actually was in ATLANTA! He then stated, "In more than 3,000 gigs and 47 years of performing, I only fucked up twice. At least I can remember the name of the band." And he received a big laugh when during Don't You he said "how about, because this IS Atlanta, and everything is very cosmopolitan".
4. I would conservatively grade the recording as upper B+, lower A-. If you want to hear soundboard quality, look elsewhere, this recording is nice but NOT a masterpiece. It probably would have been better had I utilized a battery pack and external mics, or higher end gear, but given all the troubles I have had in the past with recording (hold button, clipping, you name it), I was satisfied to just record SOMETHING. The audience is present but not the least bit bothersome. Ironically, the only amusing aspect in this regard is my daughter memorializing herself with her remark you can hear at the end of Sanctify Yourself.
5. I realize that technology evolves, and Simple Minds is playing old tunes, virtually the same setlist and banter by Jim each and every night...and most of the shows on the Alive and Kicking tour are showing up as single songs and some complete videos on youtube...but, I am old school and still love a well recorded lossless audio show. Alas, I am very disappointed to point out that this represents only the second South/North American A&K show having been torrented. The prior one uploaded by loughney (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=794204) was terrific.
6. I have not yet reviewed my Modern English and Soft Cell recordings from this night, but will subsequently upload those if they are listenable.
7. Finally, a sincere thank you to all of those who continue to record and share their concertsits definitely an altruistic act of love, taking into account the expenses (travel, lodging, tickets), skills to get the gear into the venue, need to keep quiet, and work to convert raw recordings into uploadable torrents.
