I am very excited to kick off a new mini-series of historic master recordings from dime member swittich.
Swittich taped 13 shows in 1973-1974 in the Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia area, four have been previously released from straight transfers and the balance are uncirculated. In the past collectors offering to transfer shows wanted to pick and choose specific shows, of course, we will be releasing every show...no tape left behind.
Volume 4 in our series is another very exciting find and we wanted to get it out now just in case the worst case scenario happens and we lose TTD.
For the first time directly from Scott's master tape, we get a complete 1974 Stephen Stills performance from Lexington, Kentucky.
I asked Scott for any memories of this show and he relayed the following:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If I remember correctly, the sound quality of the solo Stills recording isn't very good. I hope I'm proven to be wrong. I think this is the show where Stills performed his acoustic set so quietly you could barely hear him. (I saw Stills solo twice within a year or so, and I might be thinking about the other show, which I didn't record.) People were yelling "Louder", but Stills just continued to play very quietly. He said we would be able to hear him if we stopped yelling, not true. He seemed very obstinate.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I don't hear the audience yelling louder so this may or may not be the show Scott mentions though after "Blackbird" Stills does admonish the audience for talking, a fairly polite admonishment for Stills, telling them "...these soft songs, this place is like...this place is really severe...and everything, everybody rapping out there I can barely hear myself." I would bet this was a fairly common occurence for Stills playing arenas with an extended acoustic set during this tour.
Quality is limited by the recording equipment of the era combined with Scott not being as close to the stage as some of our previous releases. The acoustic section can be challenging at times, some tunes come through better than others. The electric portions do have some reverb due to the venue and location but, they are quite listenable. Bottom line, complete 1974 Stills shows are far and few between so I am thankful Scott was on hand to capture the evening and tapped me to help get is rare work out. This may not be one that stays in the playlist but if you are a Stills fan it is very welcome indeed.
Thanks to swittich for reaching out for assistance in getting these historic shows out, the tapes have been safely stored and so far so good on the transfers.
On the honor roll for this release is Goody, our resident pitch master, this one sure needed his help.
