The Sympathy Orchestra
The Territorian Hotel Port Road Adelaide
December 2nd 2005
Many moons ago there was an Adelaide band called the Sympathy Orchestra ( who are still playing , this is their website https://www.facebook.com/sympathyorchestra/) . The main instigator of this outfit was a guy called Julian Barnett, who is a superb guitarist, he wrote most of the songs and was the driving force behind the whole thing.
In the 90s he had a band called Billy and the Redfins who had some success, but Mr B was not interested in achieving fame and liked nothing better then to wander the interior of South Australia with a bottle of Scotlands finest for company.
We went and saw the band many times in the middle 2000's ,they usually played for free in pubs attracting a weird and offbeat audience of outcasts and derelicts. They got dropped by the Union Hotel and then took up playing the Territorian for a couple of years until the landlord gave up on them.
This was one of their last gigs aghast venue , when they allowed me to record them a couple of times , this is a gig when they played with blues guitar legend Chris Finnen and its mostly a corker. At the end of this set Mr B was legless, barely able to talk coherently as he drank a large number of coppers beers during the set. But he had played exceedingly well, with some epic interplay between him and Chris. Mr Finnen told me afterwards that this was one of those times that the music took over and was playing him.
Its all instrumental
enjoy.
