This is another one that recently surfaced in a run of pretty rare shows that were generously made available for a short time a few months ago on another tracker. Many thanks to the person who'd shared this, and some others, there and then. They'd given their blessings to both me and fnord to get any of the shows running here if we chose to do so. They knew of work we'd each done on Todd related things over here, and were agreeable to having the shows they'd shared spruced up in ways that might possibly yield some sonic improvements. At this point, some of the shows are now running here, and there are more of them to come. This had been shared on that other tracker as one single file.
The show here is from the Adventures in Utopia tour, which saw Utopia playing bigger venues than they typically might have. I saw that tour at the New York Coliseum, which held about 15,000 people. The Greek only holds about 6,000, but it's a prestigious gig in the LA area, and this recording is not disadvantaged from its open air setting. In fact, the recording is quite good, but the cassettes it was sourced from seemingly displayed some minor issues that might make you question the tuning in spots. That said, Todd does seem to be having occasional tuning issues with his guitars between songs. EQ and Mastering tools from Audacity were newly employed (in addition to what may have been done in the original share). These new applications were to add a bit more depth and clarity. Check the samples for a clear idea of what you'll be getting.
These Adventures shows could run pretty long, and this will still clock in at over 2 hours, even though it's seemingly missing the presumed show opener, Road to Utopia. It's also missing the group's usual 10 minute plus take on Ravel's Bolero, which came after an intermission, and there's a cut in Hello It's Me during the Piano Todd Medley. These were the days of showcasing individual band members, so we get post intermission features for Roger, Kasim, Willie, and Todd. After Cliche, things wrapped up with the 20 minute plus "Utopia Medley" that went back through the band's more Proggy years (and somehow includes Initiation from the Todd solo album of the same name). It's a pretty typical Adventures show regarding the song selection and some of the stage banter, but it does have it's own charms. The TR Connection boot site mentions the recording having come from Frankie and Sandra Winters. Guessing this is their grab, so thanks to them too. Enjoy!
