Lots of Todd Rundgren related material has popped up here at TTD since we almost lost the site late last year. That's been great, but one particular Utopia era hasn't seen anything surface during this timeframe. That's 1982, when Utopia had finally escaped from Bearsville Records (seemingly the inspiration behind the track Set Me Free). They'd signed to a "promising" new label, Network, and released an eponymous 3 sided album (cd's were chronologically right around the corner). Kasim Sultan had briefly gone off on his own, but was now back in the fold, and they were signed on to do a nationwide cable broadcast from a couple of nights after this in nearby Reseda, CA. Regrettably, Utopia's luck was pretty bad. The Network label soon folded, and all of their early buzz from being a Music/TV pioneering band didn't really carry on very far.
But, back to what's being shared here. TTDaddy has shared many Utopia and Todd shows here through the years, and he'd had everything included here up beginning with the 2016 share of the LA material heard here. A few years after that, he'd shared the partial Kansas City show used for tracks 26 and 27. These were the only 1982 shows I had, and I was personally always partial to the 1982 Utopia Network album. The material was really good, and it seemed like a good time and way to extend some of what they'd done with Deface the Music a few years earlies, but without the Fab Four pastiche. I'd missed a few other 82 shows once share here by being a relative latecomer (I got involved in 2013). Without access to some of those other shows, and already tinkering in various ways with many of the Todd/Utopia things I had on hand, I thought about bringing this particular share to life. The performances here were good, and Utopia was doing a lot of that Network album, along with a pretty good selection from its predecessors, Adventures in Utopia and Swing to the Right.
The sonic raw material was a pretty good aud from LA, that was missing the very end of the show. I therefore mined the sonically decent partial Kansas City show from a couple of weeks later for the missing tracks now added in here to make this performance and show "complete". In doing this, EQ and Mastering from Audacity were utilized to "smooth out" some of the rougher edges in these good audience recordings, and bring out a bit more depth and clarity. The samples will show what to expect hear if grabbing this new share. The Kansas City show is now inactive, and as of prepping this show, the LA share has 0 seeders, but is still showing as an Active torrent. Therefore, the timing seems good for diving back in to what the band was doing in 1982 via this new share. In getting this running, I'm hoping that anyone who's still got some of the other 1982 material (particularly the broadcast from Reseda on 11/25/82-thanks in advance, if that's done).
Finally, huge thanks to TTDaddy and the tapers of each of these shows that made up what will be heard in this 2025 share.
