Utopia did some reunion shows during the first 2 weeks of May in 1992. Their final gig as a regularly working and recording entity had been in July, 1985. The 1992 gigs primarily took place in Japan, although a single US "warm-up" was played in Santa Clara, CA. That show was shared here at TTD in late March, and it's still running as this is written. The shows in Japan yielded an officially released cd and video called Redux '92. That came from the final night of 3 consecutive dates played at Gatanda Kani Hoken Hall. What's being shared here is from the 2nd of those 3 nights. The material played connects to each of the 4 piece Utopia albums except for Deface the Music, and touches back even earlier with the segment from the Ikon and to Todd's AWATS with Just One Victory.
It's a very good audience recording that came to me via that same generous person who had shared about a dozen rare Todd and/or Utopia dates over at another tracker. Several of them have now gotten tweaked in a few ways for new life over here at TTD (that with the blessing of the aforementioned seeder). All of those shows had come over as a single very long flac file. Audacity has been used to newly track each of them before they're shared here. Audacity's EQ and Mastering tool set has also been applied to this show, and the others, to try to smooth out rough edges that might've been there due to the show's time period, venue, or the equipment used in the capture.
In the case of this show, a huge benefit was the well known relatively quiet and respectful nature of Japanese audiences. There's very little intrusive audience noise beyond an occasional shout of "Todd!", or something along those lines, in between songs. It seems as though the recorder was in a pretty good spot and that they used good equipment to capture the show. The show seemed to generally lack "bottom", so beyond enhancing overall clarity, the Audacity tool set generally was directed towards the bottom end, in order to hear Kasim's bass, and how he was locking with Willie. The band sings and plays great through out the show. Check the samples below to get an idea of what you'll be hearing.
Huge thanks, as always, to whoever recorded the show and began sharing it with others. Those thanks obviously go once again the person who'd shared this show and others on that other tracker and gave that nod towards taking further measures to spruce the shows up in sensible ways and share them here. Thanks too to the folks at the TR Connection who provided so much info there about tours and shows that could be utilized to give context regarding many of the shows shared here. FWIW, this particular show is reflected in the list of shows played at the TR Connection, but no recording of this had seemingly gotten to Warren, who had put together the extensive page there relating to Todd boots. It's absent on that list.
