boombox's notes september 2026:
I first came across Greene, aka Joe Anderton, wielding his Les Paul in some videos with the Cinelli Brothers, for whom he has opened a number of times too. This was just acoustic guitar and voice tonight and if you are a fan of well-crafted 60s-influenced song-writing, you will like Greene, who comes across as a slightly less world-weary version of Ocean Colour Scene's Simon Fowler. (His two EPs are also very good if you can track them down.) As for WRM, since I saw them last, they have opened for Blue Öyster Cult, welcomed a new member to the family and achieved the distinction of being the first independent rock/blues band to have a Top 10 in the UK Official Album Charts, so the chance to see them back in a small venue was not one to be missed. Indeed, some people had travelled from as far afield as Spain to be there. Billed as a trio show, it ended up just being Grace and Aaron as drummer, James Fox, had to pull out at the last minute for a family emergency. Rearranging the set at the last minute was no problem as they have a lot of great material they can call on, so while we missed out on some songs from the new album, we got a few more acoustic songs such as they played on their 2024 Red Rum Duo Tour. That said, we still got plenty of Aaron's swampy slide guitar and motherhood and sleepless nights certainly haven't damaged Grace's voice.

Aside from some mix wobbles in 'Fortunate Son' (not the CCR song!), sound was excellent, and with an audience mainly made up of respectful hardcore Rapids, it was easy to get an almost audience free recording, which only really needed some enthusiastic applause taming and levels sorted. I am really pleased with how both sets came out and can see them both getting a lot of playing time in the car.
