Here's something that seems pretty rare from the last US tour by the Zawinul Syndicate. They did their final US shows for a period of about 3 weeks in the latter part of October and early November of 2006. Joe only had a year left, was in his mid 70's, and spending more time in his native Europe. I'm not sure of the circumstances of this particular show, but somehow this fine recording emerged. There was an audience grab courtesy of Roy, and that made the rounds once upon a time, but not sure if this particular recording was intended for broadcast, or some other purpose. In any case, big thanks to those who made it available to me. This set from the Syndicate is a good companion to a another recording from a few days earlier in NYC that was shared about 6 months ago and is still live on the tracker. That NYC show was connected to JALC and was a themed tribute to Weather Report. The Syndicate revisited the WR repertoire in more specific terms in NYC than they do here, so this SF show was probably a bit more representative of what the band was about at this point.
This had come to me as separate single large files of each set, so Audacity was used to track the show. The contemporary Zawinul recordings near to the time of this tour didn't help me very much in determining track names, so if you happen to know something I left as "Unknown", please feel free to add that info below in the comments. My feeling is there are things akin to track 12, where segments and snippets of Joe's material appear for a short time, and then disappear. You'll hear that in one of the earlier tracks with In A Silent Way, but in that case it was so fleeting that the track remained "Unknown". As the samples will indicate, this was a typically amazing group of musicians onstage with Joe. I'm guessing that those who appreciated him will find this quite enjoyable.
