Tempusfugit (TF) & I’s never ending journey through the back of the wardrobe (where it’s Christmas every day, snow on the ground & all that) on Thursday night to Stockton. At least I think it was. Just when we start getting our bearings our learned friend, Boro Bri, corrects us as to which county we’re actually in. And lovely it was to see him there…we knew we were in the right place. Been a while.

Bit of an aside, but, unfeasibly difficult to get fed in Stockton. Some places seem to shut in June. One or two others, whilst open, can’t offer us a table for an hour. Did eventually find somewhere - and thank you, TF, for the “alien” pizza, so called because, after eventually eating it, it had been so big that I thought I’d be recreating the famous scene from the film of the same name. Still full.

The ARC’s a nice venue and, in anticipation of tonight’s aging audience (well done, NHS…or cryogenics…can’t quite decide, average age now well into three figures) the number of defribulators to hand had increased significantly. Mind, some had possibly been wandering around since last year’s show…some very empty local care homes, again, this evening.

I’m guessing the main hall has a capacity of around 300. Long since sold out, suggesting the band may have the option to play somewhere a bit bigger. I’ve noticed a lot of their shows are now selling out…more and more people finding them. TF & I also deduced that another indicator of more and “newer” people finding their way to Lindisfarne’s shows is the level of laughter at Rod’s…somewhat “experienced” one-liners. A lot of people seemingly hearing them for the first time tonight.

The show itself…the setlist was the same as those we’ve enjoyed recently, although I’d argue that no two performances are ever the same. Statues was very good, although DHD didn’t get quite as animated towards the end of the tune as he occasionally does. Really enjoying Rod’s tunes…and it feels like he is too. Sings brilliantly to his limitations these days, and his earthy, bluesy guitar just gets better and better. Nice to see him back on his feet for most of the first set following his recent(ish) mishap.

Crooked Mile was also spot on. Does make you wonder what else Alan might have done…if his final album’s anything to go by he was definitely hitting another purple patch of songwriting.

Second set is delivered with the same warmth & excellence as the first, and passes just as quickly. Crowd are well into it and clearly, so are the band. Cracking Sundown Station, then the holy trinity of Dingly Dell, One World & Winter song, following which it’s party time proper until we’re guided on our way home in the traditional way. During One World, I catch Rod looking over to DHD as if to say, “man, you’re singing that like you mean it”.

Another evening where we’re reminded of the sort of things that life should be all about. And even when you get up the next day, you’re still energised by it. And I’m now looking forward to the next…although that now feels some way off.

Still, started picking up tickets for shows in 2025, and, along with the AHSB and DHD’s Island band there’s a lot to look forward to.
