Lucinda Williams is currently touring two different shows: one featuring stories from her memoir "Don't Tell Anybody the Secrets," the other a more traditional show. I saw the former last year at the Beacon Theater, and this time it was her straight-up rock show at White Eagle Hall across the Hudson River, with an excellent mix of classics, new tracks, and covers, including one featured on her upcoming album of Beatles songs. Williams no longer plays guitar following her 2020 stroke, but her voice is in terrific shape, and she has a crack band featuring Doug Pettibone (guitar), Marc Ford (guitar), David Sutton (bass), and Brady Blade (drums) that just gets better as the night goes on.
My usual perch in the side balcony was all-VIP for this show, but the cardioid mics did a great job from the back balcony. They also filtered out almost all of the loud people talking behind me, though I did need to resort to iZotope RX to remove my voice during one quiet section asking my neighbors, "Could you guys shut up, please?" (They could, it turned out; though later, it turned out, they could also choose not to.)
Go buy all Lu's stuff wherever it is sold, and by all means check her out if she comes to your town, she's well worth it. Unless you just want to go talk to your friends during the show, in that case go see some band that sucks, you won't notice the difference.
